IOM Georgia Launches R-EMPOWER Project to Support Reintegration of Returning Migrants
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Georgia is pleased to announce the launch of the initiative "Enhanced Opportunities for Returning Migrants in Georgia" (R-EMPOWER), aimed at strengthening reintegration support for returning migrants. The project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and seeks to enhance the efficiency and interconnectedness of Georgia’s reintegration system at central, local, and individual levels.
“The recent migration trends have revealed an increase in returns, particularly from EU+ countries. These returning migrants often face numerous challenges, including limited employment opportunities, skill mismatches, psychological distress, and restricted access to essential services among others. Their successful reintegration is vital not only for their well-being but also for the sustainable development of their communities and the nation as a whole,” remarked Lars Johan Lönnback, IOM Georgia’s Chief of Mission.
The R-EMPOWER programme will focus on four key objectives. Firstly, it aims to strengthen the institutional capacity of national stakeholders to implement a consolidated and comprehensive reintegration framework. Secondly, it seeks to empower local self-governance and community stakeholders to address reintegration and development challenges more effectively. Additionally, the programme supports returnees in overcoming employment barriers, improving financial literacy, and accessing tailored social services. Lastly, it aims to engage with the Georgian diaspora to contribute to local development.
“Migration is a key priority for both Switzerland and Georgia. In May 2022, our two countries formalized a migration partnership, establishing a comprehensive framework for cooperation on migration-related matters. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to addressing migration challenges and opportunities in a structured and sustainable way. We are confident that through this project, we will continue to develop effective solutions that support returnee migrants, fostering their successful reintegration and contributing to broader social and economic development,” commented Barbara Böni, Regional Director of Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Georgia.
The project is implemented in close cooperation with a broad range of stakeholders in Georgia.
