IOM Participates in 16th Batumi International Conference Dedicated to 10th Anniversary of Eastern Partnership

On 11-12 July 2019 the Conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership brought together high-level state officials and representatives from academia, non-governmental sector and business representatives from the EU and six partner countries. The Conference was attended by the President of the European Council, Mr. Donuld Tusk. 

The Batumi International Conference offered specific thematic sessions highlighting major areas of cooperation where participants shared new ideas on further strengthening of the Partnership and advancing European integration processes beyond 2020.

The Regional Director of IOM's Regional Office for the EU, Norway and Switzerland, Mr. Ola Henrikson, visited Georgia to participate in the Session VII: Investing in Future: Empowering Young Generation through Education and Mobility. The other speakers of this session included the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Ms. Nino Javakhadze, the Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Georgia, Ms. Irina Abuladze, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, Mr. Evgeny Shestakov and the Director for Neighbourhood East, DG Neighbourhoot and Enlargement Negotiations, Mr. Lawrence Meredith. In his speech, Mr. Henrikson stressed the importance of promoting orderly and humane migration, benefits of circular migration and of diaspora's role in country's development. 

The aim of the Conference was to assess the Eastern Partnership, its main deliverables, as well as present geopolitical context. The participant of the conference reflected on the challenges common to the EU and Eastern partners.
