EU and IOM Install Outdoor Gym at the Temporary Accommodation Centre of the MIA Migration Department

Outdoor gym with the total cost of EUR 22 000 will allow migrants placed in the Temporary Accommodation Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) Migration Department to work out during recreational hours.

Tbilisi, 22 February 2023 – Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA),      hosted a formal handover ceremony, for an outdoor gym facility that was donated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Delegation of the European Union.

The ceremony was attended by the Director of Migration Department - Mikheil Chikvaidze, IOM Georgia Chief of Mission – Sanja Celebic Lukovac and the Deputy Head of the Political, Press and Information Section of the EU Delegation to Georgia – Evija Kotan.

About the Installed Equipment

The installation process was divided into two components: development of infrastructure, and procurement and installation of gym equipment. As a result of the activity, the Temporary Accommodation Centre of MIA Migration Department possesses two separate outdoor gym facilities (total cost EUR 22,000) that will be used for workout by female and male migrants while enjoying recreational hours.

Outdoor gym facilities will help the MIA Migration Department to offer more opportunities for outdoor activities to all accommodated migrants at the center, who have been administratively detained and may experience extended stay, while waiting for expulsion decision and/or replacement of expired or lost travel documents.

About the project

The action titled “Border and Migration Management Action for Georgia (BMMAG): Supporting the Government of Georgia in the Further Development of Border and Migration Management Capacities” is implemented by International Organization for Migration (IOM) since 1 January 2022 under the EU Resilience Facility programme. The overall objective of the project is to support the Government of Georgia in sustaining more effective integrated border management and migration governance in Georgia.
