Immigrant Integration Policy and Practice in Georgia - Achievements, Challenges and the Way Forward
The increasing number of immigrants in the country has prompted the Government of Georgia to allocate more resources to manage immigration and place special emphasis on the integration of foreigners who reside in the country. Significant reforms and structural changes occurred within MOLHSA, including the gaining of new responsibilities for migrant integration after the abolishment of the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation of Georgia. This impacts the institutional and operational framework of migration management in the country.
The presented study aims at identifying the challenges to immigrant integration based on a contextual analysis of Georgia’s legislation on immigrant integration. The study assesses and analyzes causes for immigration to Georgia; explores the integration needs of different categories of immigrants; collects and analyzes the statistical data on residence permits issued to immigrants of different categories, looks at the legislation governing immigrants’ entry into and residence in Georgia, and evaluates state programmes and services designed for immigrant integration.
